When it's happening? June 19 & 20, 2003, early (10 am?) until late (10 pm) Saturday, 10 am until late afternoon Sunday
Where it's happening? Oakland Oregon, on 33 ruminant filled acres of woods and pasture. (Directions provided by email request)
Where can you stay? Penelope posted a few local hotels and I will get them here in a day or two. Also, if you are up for it, we are on plenty of land and camping and such is available.
Why should you come? Come for good food, good conversation, a variety of roasters, espresso machines. Meet the other weirdos, coffee roasting aficionados. See the lurkers lurk. Maybe see a Troll troll. See Gin jump a roasting fire sans garments (ok, I am not sure of this one, but we don't mind, and someone else brought it up) Put faces to those names you read ever day, including hot and cold roaming Johns, of the wandering:-(, alchemist and probably other varieties. Come for the chance to meet a sheep or a goat nose to nose, or pet a hen held by a small child. It's a good chance to find out how many roasters and/or espresso machines must be running at once to overload the electric panel.
How can you help? Oh we're sure to find a way.
Turn yourself in. Let Alchemist John or his partner Penelope know you're coming, and how many people, animals, roasters or brewers (approximately) you're bringing with you. Also tell them if you have any particular dietary restrictions, allergies, fears, hopes, dreams. . . well you get the idea.
NOTE: on Allergies, we'll do what we can to label all foods. If you have non-food allergies, such as to pet dander, bees, pollen, dust etc, we probably have what's required to send you in to a full blown allergy attack right here on the property. Please be prepared.
Volunteer. The opportunities are endless.
Do you like to cook? Offer to bring or prepare a food for the gathering. (Then follow through.) Alchemist John will be posting his proposed menu and updating it as he gets the chance. Other people who offer to bring food can also be listed, so that everyone knows what's been thought of and what hasn't.
Do you like to wash dishes? OH, do we have a deal for you . . .
Do you have dishes to bring? Please do if you're local or driving something with a lot of space. Alchemist John wants to do non-disposable eating equipment.
Can you read story books? There's a small child on the premises who will be constantly underfoot, but likes to be read to.
Would you like to talk to a group about your particular type of roasting? If you tell us before hand we'll list you here so people can plan to come.
Want to demonstrate your particular style of blow torch/dog bowl/bean juggling method of roasting? Tells us, bring it along, show it off and hopefully let others use/abuse it too. Same for espresso machines. Please bring them if you can. We plan to have the shop work bench open. It is on 20 amp circuits and is it own 200 amp panel. It's the perfect time to examine your choices if you are thinking about buying one and want to try one (or two or three) out.
I really want this to be a hands on Gathering, hence the two days. We're roasters, lets roast! In addition, if there is interest, I will take people through raw cocoa beans to finished chocolate.
NEWS Tom has offered to supply what we need for a full real cupping. The beans (9 Panama Auction coffees), cups etc. and probably some roasted Probat coffee. Thanks Tom!
Now a few details:
BYO: if you've got a favorate coffee or espresso drinking device, and can safely transport it, please bring it. We have a few mugs, but little else on hand due to the shuffling of our belongings after the fire.
Proposed Menu thoughts (v denotes vegan, no animal products at all). This will get changed or adjusted as things become more definate. I am shooting for a generally Ethiopian and Indian fare, although I am definitely throwing in some other things I really like. Initials or names means it is taken care of. If you don't see a name and want to bring it, let us know and you can do it and we will mark it according. Want to bring something else, OK.
