Here are a couple pictures from our day (well, last night and today) for anyone who's interested.

Before

After gifts

Some of us are having a quiet day cooking, knitting and relaxing. Others of us are bouncing off the walls, carrying things around, opening things, and generally enjoying the day.

John is making a feast of Ethiopian food. Robyn is relaxing. Steve just showed up to eat good food with us. And Logan is really in need of a nap, but too excited to settle down for one.

Beach Blanket number 2 from Cheryl

[Thu 19:40] Auntie Cheryl ~
I recognize stuff in all the photos. Wondering now how snowed in you are, if at all, now it's mid-January.

Will also announce with pride that I have an 8-by-16-foot space almost completely cleared of stuff in my house, so if you visit within the next two weeks, you'll have a place to stand. :)

I still haven't gotten the day light snow pictures set to post. I haven't had much free time this week, although I did manage to get holiday packages in the mail. Phew. So this is just a few pictures for now. And maybe I'll get back here soonish to add some more and even write a little bit.

Reading her first copy of "Ladybug" magazine.

Every girl needs a good riding snail

The sweater is because the snail was cold this morning.

Oh yeah. Robyn turned 21, plus a bit, yesterday on the winter solstice. John baked him a cake, and Logan and I took it to Eugene. We'll see him here in a couple of days for christmas chaos too.

Happy Birthday To You

You can't blow out candles by yourself when Logan's around.

Adding this for John's mom who says she doesn't see any links to anything Logan might like for a holiday gift, only a list of things she "can't" have.

Here is the link for Hanna Andersson's Web Page. If you click on the underlined words, it will take you to that page.

In fact, here is a link for the Hannah Long Johns that Logan sleeps in, when she chooses not to sleep naked, or in day clothes, or some other combination of things. Last night it was a wool sweater and shirt. The night before it was her one set of stripey H. A. long johns. It changes with her mood I think. The stuff on sale seems to be mostly sold out in Logan's size, which is 90.

I also posted this down in comments on whatever the appropriate day was, but the html for the links didn't show links, just code. My computer is having a bad morning however, so this is try three or four to get this posted. Then I'll shut the whole thing down for a nice rest.

And added for Andrea here is the Garden Kids link. Junebug isn't on the web, unfortionately for us. I'll provide their phone number to anyone who asks though. They are my favorate makers of Logan clothes, I think. Garden Kids may be a close second though.

[Sun 12:39] Andrea ~
yay! Snow! Looks like you got a little more than we did here near the river. I was going to call you guys a bit before 10PM, when I saw it was trying to snow (I was making frequent trips to the laundry shed to check on my felting project - by the way, are you working on yours and do you need to come over to use our washer?) but Amy called us about the snow sticking at their place: more than an inch! By the time we finished talking it was too late to call. I can see you enjoyed it alot! Great pictures! Regarding the gift links, my mom and her husband loved the Rosie Hippo catalog (once I caught her before she threw it out with the junk mail, not noticing the unique name to which it was addressed) and had a grand time picking something out, and even declaring that Grandpa was going to have to come visit so he could play with the toy with Aidan ( this grandpa has been extremely busy and traveling even more than usual since the war began and has not been around to visit!) Which reminds me, I haven't checked the news but Bob says the Iraqui dictator has been captured alive. Wow. Anyway, few and far between are the toys relatives have sent that THEY wanted to play with, too. I think that's the kind of toy to have, don't you?
[Sun 12:56] Andrea ~
sorry, long-winded ANdrea found a couple more things to say. I tried to click your "long johns" link, thinking it might be Junebug, or Gardenkids brand, but the address in the link is a mishmosh and takes you nowhere! If someone wants to find one of your recommendations, it really would be easier and more accurate if they just did a search on their own. The Hanna link works. Maybe Ruzz didn't like his socks?

Does the weather pixie have a boat? Or wings?

Andrea, I fixed the link, and added a Garden Kids link for you. If anyone else is looking at GK, Logan likes the pumpkin design. And already has a blue jumper, brown fleece pants, and blue cords with a blue/green shirt I think, but I can't remember what's on the shirt so I might be mixed up there. She hasn't had the chance to try their long johns yet, they're saved for holiday gifts too. I came home with a Dolly Mama doll and clothes for her today too, and now I want to knit it a tiny sweater, and then maybe see if I can swap other sweaters for more dolly clothes. I wanna knit. Knit, knit, knit, knit!

Okay, so not in the morning. John went out to cover a plant better and came in with a snow ball. So we all went out. I'll give you a miniaturized selection. I guess I'd better find out how to put a bigger picture up "behind" a mini one. I don't have a clue yet. Ruzz, are you reading? Stop laughing and tell me how to write the right html stuff. :-)

its a secret. :P

Not much snow, and it's mixed with rain, but enough that we could see it on Sunny-dog's back. And Logan got to see some. She still wants to go see more, but we're trying to plan a trip to find snow for the end of this month.

And, although this isn't much of a post, I do have a Logan picture, two actually, to add for the sake of Grandma, Grandma and Grandpa.

Buttons in the back.

Oseralls, just like Baby's.

If we have snow on the ground by morning I'll take a picture to post for all you Florida Folks.

We went to Eugene's Holiday Market today. Whee, what fun. We saw Andrea, Bob and Aidan, and got to do things as a sixsome part of the time, which worked especially well when Andrea and I stopped to look at things and didn't have to wonder who was keeping an eye on the short people. Last week I went with Joana, which also worked similarly well. Ah the luxury of other people keeping track of my kid.

One of the vendors at Holiday market makes clothes that many of you have seen Logan in. Things with machine embroidered designs, and in multi colored cotton and hemp fabric. Last week we went planning to get Logan a new pair of "footy pants" from him, but alas, he only normally makes them up to size 2. But he offered to make a 3T set for Logan, in multi colors, which is different from the others he makes (footy pants are normally all one color.) This week we picked them up. He said he'd had many inquiries about them, and his own kids wanted sets, so he may start making them in larger sizes regularly. The feet are out of the same fabric as the rest of the pants, with no traction stuff on the bottoms, so Logan can wear them in shoes, or on their own. She loves them. I don't think they have a web page up, but they do business under the name Junebug, and perhaps I can come up with a phone number or an email address for them if any one wants to track them down. We have yet to wear out anything from them. Some things have been outgrown, but not out worn. I love the holiday market new clothing time of year! I always set out to shop for gifts, and come home with clothes for Logan. I need to take a picture of her in the new clothes still. Next post maybe.

John took some pictures of the night sky tonight. One of the many things he and I love about being here in Oregon. He likes the first one below better, I like the second.

cloudy cloudy moon

Clearer now.

And in case anyone has missed pictures of me in the blog, here's one Logan took this evening, with help from John. My outfit for the day included a jumper over all the black, but it was too fussy to keep on at home, so I'm cold instead.

kid's eye view

Last of all, I'll leave you with my attempts at knitting last night. If you look closely you can see the knitting in progress, on the needles, under the soundly sleeping kitten. I had to change to another project.

But it looked like a fine place to nap!

Logan and I are both on asthma medicines now, and breathing and sleeping better than before. Evidently what we have is a mild variety, triggered by a cold, or in my case by exercise or some dusty things (hay comes to mind first of all). It's a little odd to be taking so many medicines, between keeping track of mine and hers, but it's making life much nicer for both of us. We may yet haul John in to be checked for allergies or asthma, but he hasn't had a cough that he can't get rid of yet, this winter.

We haven't managed to send out any holiday cards yet. Another week maybe. Or I'll just send them all Jan 1, 2004. Don't hold your breath waiting, but I still think you'll hear from us eventually.

Well, I commented anachronistically (?), but topically, below, does that get noticed? Or should I stick with the current date? Anyway, I also wondered why you didn't mention Hanna Andersson (yes, two esses) clothing. I did get Logan one thing she liked from there, but if anyone else would like to add to Logan's eclectic clothing: size 90. And with Logan, you don't really have to worry about things "not matching!" They may still have last summer's overstock on sale, so for next summer maybe size 100? And of course, people sell it secondhand on e-b*y auction. I'm just lucky we get so many of your hand-me-downs! Perhaps people will think this is a long-range scheme for my own wants! Well, as enlightened as we strive to be, Aidan does not wear dresses or flowery tights ( and I did get Logan a dress, not boy's clothing, how foolish of me, hmmm...) at least, not in public. Yet. So what does everyone think of the flu scare? We got a concerned call from one grandma recently about whether we've got our seasonal vaccine. Well, I did restock our Vit C.... I don't think there's any in stock locally, except for the highest risk people.
[Mon 17:29] penelope email ~ site
But would Aidan like to wear flowery tights? Perhaps I should ask him. (For those of you not in the know, Logan believes that all of her clothes should be handed down to Aidan, pink dresses and all.) Logan is now trying to carry me upstairs for nap. Time to go.

.: 08:24 :.

I'm joining a couple of other moms I know in saying I don't want this plastic disposable garbage in my house. If you'd like to send Logan a gift this year (if you're not closely related to her you can ignore this post folks! I'm not trying to solicit more stuff for her Just different stuff from the people who already were going to send something), please could you make it a wooden toy. Or a cloth doll? Something out of fabric is great. Clothing, or even dress up stuff is wonderful. Or something made from metal that will last. Things aimed at three to four year olds - you know age appropriate. Puzzles. Music instruments. Books: we don't have any wizard of oz books yet. We do have a few (beat up, old, from the used book store) little house books, but I'm not sure which ones since we haven't started reading them yet.

Logan and I will be weeding through her toys to get rid of as much of the plastic and disposable stuff as possible this month. She likes to build things, so I'm going to see about getting her some wooden Lincoln logs (do they still come in wood?), and some more blocks. So I'm going to set up links to toy stores that carry some of the old style toys made from wood, dolls from cloth etc. Yes they cost more. They also last more, and stand up more. And are less likely to be put in the thrift store donation pile.

We found some durable cloth dolls at Holiday Market last week that come with clothing and diapers (cloth with covers) and or undies. We'll probably spend some more time playing at that booth, and Logan will probably end up with something from them as a holiday gift. I want some of the dolls! The shop is called The Dolly Mama.

Rosie Hippo Toys beautiful Wood toys and imagination stimulators.
Uncle Goose Toys Blocks and puzzles!
The Elephant's Trunk, cool toys in Eugene

FAO Schwarz toys for three year old kids, but lots o plastic stuff.

You'll still have to use your discretion. These catalogs may carry junk as well as good stuff. They may carry over priced things. Hell, they probably carry overpriced junk. Buyer beware.

In related news, FAO is looking at bankruptcy again, people are spending their money on *mart toys rather than the old classics. You can probably find more info on it from NPR or with a web search. I heard it on the radio this morning.

I listened to someone else's grand parent tell me how a friends child was getting "all this great stuff" that she found second hand, because her own grandchild's parents were too snobby to let the child have the (trademarked, name brand, plastic junk) she found. So does that make me and John snobs? Maybe. I don't know. But we're raising a pretty cool kid, and we're trying to keep it that way.

If you don't want to shop then don't bother. If you want to shop but don't want to wrap or ship, you can mail order and have them do it for you. If you choose to send Logan money, for whatever reason, it will end up in her saving's account. She knows where her gifts come from, and can tell any one who asks which Grandma made what, or what Aunty Cheryl gave her when she visited. If you don't want to shop for me or John, fine. We'll survive. But if you want to send Logan something, please actually send something, so she can enjoy it.

Yes, Lincoln Logs are still wood! And we love Rosie Hippo toys, too. Magic Cabin Dolls is another good one - you won't find junk in either catalog.

My first thougth was to try to figure out which niece/great niece/cousin Kayla was, and whether her parents were actually likely to recognize those catalogs. Then I followed the site link and saw that you're not related to me at all. :-)

I had a weird shipping experience with Magic Cabin, they ignored my instructions, kept me waiting, and were not very pleasent about dealing with the mistake. So I look at the catalogs, but I haven't felt moved to order since then.

[Mon 12:09] Andrea ~
Ah, bold Penelope! I know we've talked a little about this (in person), and I'm glad to see you've found a way to broach the subject with friends and family. Another issue with the plastic toys that gets overlooked is that different plastics are banned from children's products about every year. It's not that there aren't fun, stimulating toys made of plastic, but there are so many reasons to prefer wood and cloth. Personally, I also want to reduce use of petroleum products - some think thats absurd, others think it's even a political issue, or an environmental one. And I hate when a toy ceases being a toy because it's batteries are dead, whereas Aidan can play endlessly with a wooden car with wheels that roll. To add to your list of toy vendors, I think many of those created by A. C. Gilmore (I'm not sure I have the name right) are in revival; he made the original toy that Rosie Hippo calls "Fiddlesticks" and many others. There is a museum/science center of his things with a great playyard in Oregon, Salem, I think. I understand that it can be hard to find nonplastic toys at the local mall - the last few times I've been in a chain toy store, I've walked through and out without finding anything I'd want to give to Aidan. I just got my order from Rosie Hippo, though, and I'm thrilled with everything. If the toys don't appeal, then they have a fabulous collection of books and music or stories on CD. Since you and Logan are on the road a lot, those items are used daily! Speaking of which, have you transferred your CD case from the van to the Volvo? I like Neil Diamond alright, but it's the only CD we played last carpool to Eugene! And back. ACK.
